ambisonic and binaural tests using nuendo

So, I’ve been experimenting with immersive headphone stuff for a while, but with mixed results. I ran across this youtube video with this lady who exported her stems in l/r mono to a directory and worked from that. Made perfect sense to me, so I’m working with these in various incarnations. Here are my findings:

full steinberg ambi panner + decoder
1. sounds ok

steinberg panner + dearvr ambi micro decoder
1. sounds better.
2. This really does seem to be the best combination.
3. Make sure that the dearvr ambi micro decoder is set to 4th order (default is first)

dearvr music into a stereo bus (decodes to binaural in the plugin)
1. so far isn’t working
* got it working. Nobody will tell you this, but you CAN’T enter any dearvr panner onto a mono track. It MUST be a stereo track and then you can place a mono track onto that.
2. Now that I have it working, the plugin interface is fairly useless, as they incorporate level (distance) into the panner. It makes mixing rather useless.
3. A major pain to work with for actual mixing/setup, as it is a plugin and can’t be placed into the panner section.

dearvr orbit (decodes to binaural in the plugin)
1. A major pain to work with for actual mixing/setup, as it is a plugin and can’t be placed into the panner section.
2. The interesting thing is that orbit just might be the best solution. Using my original approach, it can be useful to put orbit into a stereo mix on a small number of perc and high-freq tracks to add dimension.
